Day 5: Julian

9.1 miles (14.6km)

30 Apr 2018

Early morning hike with Larry Bird to the Scissors Crossing trailhead. When we came near the road around 9h, a guy already came walking towards us asking if we needed a ride into Julian. Sweet! He was a trail angel called Ghost. We waited for a few more hikers and drove off to Julian, a small former gold-mining town 12 miles off-trail.

Had a superb breakfast of eggs, bacon and two huge pancakes together with Larry Bird and Laura. They both offered me $5 to finish both pancakes but it was just too much. None of us were brave enough to eat all.

A little walk around town and some tea later, I went to get some resupplies. Not that I really needed it. Been hauling too much food since we left Campo but Laura convinced me to get some Skittles and Starburst.

Afterwards, we went to Mom's where PCT hikers get a free piece of pie with ice cream and a drink. I love this little town. Our last stop before heading out again was Carmen's. She is a Julian trail legend who sadly had to sell her place. Yesterday was actually her last official day open. Today she was there to clear out. It was sad to see even though I only read about the place on a few blogs. I got a beer from the cooler and sat down on the empty restaurant floor. We all got a hug from Carmen, filled up on water and got a ride back to the mile 77 trail head from Brew Hiker.

At the water cache under the bridge where we - Kevin, Larry Bird and myself - were dropped off, we met another couple of trail angels from whom we got an orange.

Finally back on trail to do just a few more miles so we can get to Warner Springs in two 15 mile days.
