Day 120: Packwood Lake

31.0 miles (49.9km)

23 Aug 2018

We continue to walk through the Goat Rocks Wilderness. The views are simply stunning. The best we had since leaving the snowy peaks of the high Sierra.

The day started out with some smoke and clouds, but once it cleared we had absolutely impressive views of volcano Mt. Rainier.

We could also see smoke rise from the nearby Miriam and North Fork forest fires on both sides of the trail. Due to this, we take an alternate route at the Coyote trail junction after our lunch break.

And halfway into the alternate, we take tet another trail taking us to Packwood Lake. Here we meet up with Katie, a friend of Roadrunner. Unfortunately you can't get to the lake by car, so we have to hike an additional unplanned 5 miles to the parking lot.

We drive to Ashford where we have dinner at The Highlander. Interesting place. Afterwards, we head into Mt. Rainier National Park where Roadrunner's friend works and lives.
